Barkly Highway encourages students to be active. The school runs an annual Swimming and Athletics carnival. Students are grouped into houses which they represent and compete for, earning points. The house with the most points is the overall winner at each of the carnivals.
Swimming Carnival is the first opportunity for the teams to compete. This is an event for year 3-6 students after the swimming block.

Our school has held an annual Fun Run to raise money for sports equipment and maintain our great sporting facilities. Students have access to sports equipment during their lunchtimes. While some students choose to kick the footballs and soccer balls, others choose to set up their own games of dodge ball and even t-ball. The senior students are also responsible for ensuring all the post-pads on the football and soccer goals on the oval are put out and taken down each week.
The Mount Isa Primary Schools Sports Association is a group of staff from the Mount Isa schools, and assist local primary schools, including Barkly Highway State School, in arranging dates for Interschool sport carnivals. Our school participates in all Interschool sport carnivals.
